The Waste Land
原注:
Not only the title, but the plan and a good deal of the incidental symbolism
of the poem were suggested by Miss Jessie L. Weston's book on the Grail
legend: From Ritual to Romance (Cambridge). Indeed, so deeply am I
indebted, Miss Weston's book will elucidate the difficulties of the poem
much better than my notes can do; and I recommend it (apart from the great
interest of the book itself) to any who think such elucidation of the poem
worth the trouble. To another work of anthropology I am indebted in general,
one which has influenced our generation profoundly; I mean The Golden Bough;
I have used especially the two volumes Adonis, Attis, Osiris. Anyone who is
acquainted with these works will immediately recognise in the poem certain references
to vegetation ceremonies.
传说的书籍 From Ritual to Romance(剑桥)。
Nam Sibyllam quidem Cumis ego ipse oculis meis vidiin ampulla pendere, et cum illi pueri dicerent: Σίβνλλα τί ϴέλεις; respondebat illa: άποϴανεΐν ϴέλω.
Since indeed I saw with my eyes, the Cumaean Sibyl in a bottle. And whenever the boys asked: Sibyl, what do you want; she responded: I want to die.
This is a quote from the first-century Roman prose work Satyricon (c.54-68)
believed to be by Gaius Petronius (27-66CE).
For Ezra Pound
致 Ezra Pound
il miglior fabbro
Better craftman
但丁在炼狱第七层淫欲层见到了诗人阿诺·丹尼尔的灵魂, 称其为「fu miglior fabbro del parlar materno」, 即「he was a better craftman of his mother tongue」, 他是其母语(普罗旺斯语)中更好的匠人。
I. The Burial of the Dead /
「The Burial of the Dead」语出 Anglican Book of Common Prayer, 在中文语境下相当于《礼记·丧大记》。

Norton 注:
According to Valerie Eliot's notes to the published manuscript of
The Waste Land, Eliot based this sledding incident on a conversation
he had with the Countess Marie Larisch, who published her reminiscences
of the Austrian nobility in My Past (1913).
Valerie Eliot(应该是指此诗作者 T. S. Eliot 的第二任也是最后一任妻子)
Marie Larisch
